The orange trees were flowering when I stopped believing in itineraries. A woman poured me water from a clay jug and asked, in the way only strangers can, whether I was resting or hiding. I didn't know yet. That was the trip that taught me to sit long enough for the answer to arrive.

It rained for three days. I gave up walking to anything, and instead watched a single moss garden change color between morning and afternoon. The photographs from those days are the ones I return to when a quarter has gone loud.

Figs, olives, and a very slow lunch

A four-hour meal on a farm outside Ostuni — the kind of meal that reorganizes what you thought you needed the rest of the week for. I've been trying, imperfectly, to bring that pacing home to Los Angeles ever since.
